John 2:5 — Meaning & Reflection
“His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."”
Trust often takes its next step by obeying Jesus before the outcome becomes clear.
Background
At a wedding in Cana, Jesus’ mother tells the servants to follow his instructions after the wine runs out. Jesus then turns water into wine, the first sign recorded in John’s Gospel.
Teaching
Mary directs the servants toward Jesus rather than offering a solution of her own. Their task is to heed his words, while the transforming power belongs to him. This scene invites a trust that becomes practical obedience, without suggesting that obedience lets us control God’s timing. We follow Jesus because he is trustworthy, even when we cannot see what comes next.
Reflect
- What instruction of Jesus am I already aware of but hesitant to follow?
- Where am I confusing trust in God with a demand for a particular outcome?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I want to listen carefully and respond faithfully to your words. Give me courage to obey without needing to control what follows. Amen.
