John 20:29-31 — Meaning & Reflection
“Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”
Faith can rest on trustworthy testimony even when our own eyes have not seen the risen Christ.
Background
These verses follow the risen Jesus' encounter with Thomas, who had wanted to see evidence of his resurrection. The Gospel then explains that its recorded signs were written to lead readers to faith and life in Jesus.
Teaching
Jesus blesses those who believe without having the direct sight Thomas received. This is not an invitation to believe without any foundation, for the Gospel offers testimony to Jesus' works and identity. Its purpose is to bring us to trust Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God. Through that trust, we receive life in him rather than merely information about him.
Reflect
- What questions or doubts do I need to bring honestly to Jesus?
- How can I read the Gospel today with openness to knowing Christ, rather than simply gathering facts?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, meet me in my questions and strengthen my trust through the testimony of Scripture. Help me receive the life you give and walk in it today. Amen.
