Acts 1:8 — Meaning & Reflection
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."”
The Spirit gives us power not to magnify ourselves, but to bear witness to Jesus wherever he sends us.
Background
Acts, traditionally attributed to Luke, records this promise from the risen Jesus shortly before his ascension. The movement from Jerusalem outward anticipates the spread of the gospel throughout the book.
Teaching
Jesus redirects his followers from questions about timing to their calling as witnesses. The Holy Spirit will supply the power they need to speak of Christ and live faithfully for him. Their mission begins where they are but reaches beyond familiar boundaries. We too can depend on the Spirit rather than personal confidence as we share what Jesus has done.
Reflect
- Where has God already placed me to bear witness to Jesus?
- What fear or prejudice might be keeping me from sharing his love beyond my familiar circle?
Prayer
Father, help me depend on the power of your Holy Spirit rather than my own strength. Give me courage, humility, and love to bear witness to Jesus wherever you lead me. Amen.
