John 17:20-23 — Meaning & Reflection
“"My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.”
Jesus prays for a unity rooted in God's love, making our life together a witness to the world.
Background
In John 17, Jesus prays to the Father before his arrest. Here his prayer extends beyond the disciples present to those who will believe through their testimony.
Teaching
Jesus' prayer reaches across generations to include those who trust him today. He asks for a unity grounded in the communion of the Father and the Son, not merely in shared preferences. This unity makes God's love visible and bears witness that the Father sent Jesus. As we pursue truth, humility, and reconciliation, we participate in the shared life for which Jesus prayed.
Reflect
- Where might pride or suspicion be weakening my fellowship with other believers?
- What step toward reconciliation could help make God's love visible through me?
Prayer
Father, thank you that Jesus prayed for those who would believe through his disciples' witness. Soften my pride and help me pursue unity that reflects your truth and love. Amen.
