John 1:29 — Meaning & Reflection
“The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
Jesus meets the world’s deepest wound not by overlooking sin, but by taking it away.
Background
John the Baptist speaks these words when he sees Jesus approaching, following his testimony to religious representatives from Jerusalem. His identification of Jesus as God’s Lamb introduces sacrificial imagery that points toward Jesus’ death.
Teaching
John directs attention away from himself and toward the Savior God has provided. The image of the Lamb points to Jesus’ sacrificial work against sin, not merely his example of kindness. His mission reaches beyond one community to the world. We can therefore face our sin honestly, looking to Christ for the forgiveness we cannot supply ourselves.
Reflect
- What sin do I need to bring honestly before Jesus rather than hide or excuse?
- How can my words and actions direct someone’s attention toward Christ today?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I confess my need for the mercy only you can give. Thank you for bearing sin’s cost, and help me turn from sin toward you. Amen.
