John 13:34-35 — Meaning & Reflection
“"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."”
Love shaped by Jesus makes his presence visible in the life of his people.
Background
Jesus gives this command during his final supper with the disciples, after Judas has gone out. As he prepares them for his departure, he makes his own love the pattern for their relationships.
Teaching
The command to love is given its defining measure in Jesus’ love for his disciples. His love serves, remains faithful, and moves toward the cross. Such love is more than warm feeling; it takes shape in patient, practical care within the community of believers. Through this shared life, the world is meant to recognize whose disciples we are.
Reflect
- How has Jesus’ love challenged the way I treat another believer?
- What concrete act of patient care could make his love visible today?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, let your love reshape the way I see and treat others. Help me love my fellow believers with the patience and generosity you have shown me. Amen.
