John 13:14-15 — Meaning & Reflection
“Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.”
The Lord who kneels to serve teaches us that no act of humble love is beneath us.
Background
During the supper before his crucifixion, Jesus washes his disciples’ feet, a task associated with humble service. Afterward, he explains that his action provides an example for their life together.
Teaching
Jesus does not set aside his authority when he serves; he shows how his authority expresses love. If their Lord washes feet, his disciples cannot treat humble service as beneath their dignity. His example calls us to notice practical needs and respond without demanding recognition. God’s greatness is revealed in a love willing to stoop for the good of others.
Reflect
- What ordinary task have I avoided because it feels beneath me?
- Whom can I serve today without seeking thanks or attention?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, loosen my attachment to status and recognition. Give me a humble heart that notices needs and gladly serves. Amen.
