John 12:24-26 — Meaning & Reflection
“I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.”
Following Jesus means releasing our claim to control and trusting God to bring fruit through surrendered love.
Background
After some Greeks ask to see Jesus, he announces that the hour of his glorification has come. The grain of wheat points toward his approaching death, and he connects his own self-giving with the calling of his servants.
Teaching
The grain that dies and bears fruit first points to Jesus’ death bringing life to others. Those who serve him are called to follow his pattern of surrender rather than make self-preservation their highest aim. His strong language about hating one’s life calls for loyalty to him above earthly life, not contempt for our God-given worth. The Father honors those who follow the Son, whose costly love bears lasting fruit.
Reflect
- What am I holding so tightly that it hinders my obedience to Jesus?
- Where might following him require a quiet act of costly love today?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me release whatever I place above faithfulness to you. Teach me to serve with courage and trust the fruit of my obedience to the Father. Amen.
