John 11:25-26 — Meaning & Reflection
“Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"”
In the presence of death, Jesus offers more than comfort: he offers himself as resurrection and life.
Background
Jesus speaks these words to Martha after her brother Lazarus has died. Martha has affirmed the future resurrection, and Jesus directs her hope toward himself before raising Lazarus.
Teaching
Jesus does not treat Martha’s grief as unimportant; he meets her within it. He declares that resurrection and life are found in his own person. Believers still face physical death, but death cannot finally destroy the life he gives. God’s promise allows us to grieve honestly while holding a hope stronger than the grave.
Reflect
- What grief or fear of loss do I need to bring honestly to Jesus?
- How does his promise of resurrection shape the way I face today?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, meet me in my grief and in the fears I struggle to name. Help me trust you as the resurrection and the life, even through tears. Amen.
