John 1:16-18 — Meaning & Reflection
“From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, , who is at the Father's side, has made him known.”
We do not have to guess God’s heart; Jesus makes him known from the fullness of his grace.
Background
These verses conclude the opening prologue of John’s Gospel. They connect the law given through Moses with the grace and truth revealed through Jesus Christ, who uniquely makes the Father known.
Teaching
The fullness of Christ is the source of the grace his people receive. The law given through Moses was God’s gift, and Jesus brings the decisive revelation of God’s grace and truth. Because the Son lives in unique intimacy with the Father, he makes known the God we cannot see. We learn to know God by attending to Jesus, not by treating our fears as an accurate picture of him.
Reflect
- Which assumptions about God need to be reshaped by what Jesus reveals?
- Where can I receive Christ’s grace today instead of pretending to be self-sufficient?
Prayer
Father, I thank you for making yourself known through Jesus. Reshape my understanding of you, and teach me to live from his fullness rather than my own resources. Amen.
