John 1:12-14 — Meaning & Reflection

“Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God-- children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

John 1:12-14 (NIV)

The God who came near in Jesus welcomes believers into a family they could never earn their way into.

Background

In the opening of John’s Gospel, these verses follow the account of the Word being rejected by his own. They contrast that rejection with receiving him and announce that the eternal Word became flesh.

Teaching

Becoming a child of God is not an achievement of ancestry, effort, or human determination. It is a new birth from God, received through faith in Jesus. The Word becoming flesh shows that God’s welcome is not distant: he entered our human life. In Jesus, grace and truth meet us together, offering both mercy and a faithful revelation of God.

Reflect

Prayer

Father, I thank you for welcoming me through your Son rather than through my achievements. Help me receive your grace and walk honestly in your truth. Amen.
