John 1:1-4 — Meaning & Reflection

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men.”

John 1:1-4 (NIV)

Before your story began, Christ was already the source of life and the light that darkness could not create.

Background

John’s Gospel opens by echoing the beginning of Genesis. Its opening passage introduces the eternal Word, later identified as Jesus Christ, through whom all things were made.

Teaching

Jesus is not merely a wise teacher who appeared within history; he is the eternal Word who was with God and was God. Everything owes its existence to him, and life finds its source in him. When your days feel scattered or uncertain, you can turn toward the One who gives both life and light.

Reflect

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I praise you as the source of my life and the light of my days. Help me trust you with what I cannot yet understand. Amen.
