Genesis 18:14 — Meaning & Reflection
“Is anything too hard for the Lord ? I will return to you at the appointed time next year and Sarah will have a son."”
God's promises are not confined by the limits that make us laugh in disbelief.
Background
During a visit from three visitors, Abraham hears that Sarah will bear a son. Sarah, who is listening nearby and is past childbearing age, laughs inwardly before the Lord responds with this question.
Teaching
The Lord's question draws attention from human impossibility to divine power. Sarah's age cannot prevent God from fulfilling the particular promise he has made. This is not a guarantee that every outcome we desire will happen, but an invitation to trust what God truly promises. His faithfulness can sustain us even when our understanding reaches its limit.
Reflect
- Where have I allowed my limitations to define what I believe God can do?
- How can I distinguish trusting God's promises from insisting on my preferred outcome?
Prayer
Lord, you know where hope has become difficult for me. Help me trust your power and faithfulness while surrendering the outcomes I cannot control. Amen.
