Genesis 22:14 — Meaning & Reflection

“So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, "On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided."”

Genesis 22:14 (NIV)

God's provision invites gratitude, not the illusion that we can control how help will come.

Background

After God stops Abraham from sacrificing Isaac, Abraham offers a ram caught in a thicket instead. He names the place Jehovah-jireh in response to the provision he has received.

Teaching

In this difficult account of testing, Isaac's life is spared and God supplies the offering. Abraham's naming of the place keeps the focus on the Lord who provides. Christians can see here a pattern that points toward God's gift of his Son for our salvation. We remember this provision not as a promise of an easy life, but as a reason to entrust ourselves to God's grace.

Reflect

Prayer

Lord, I thank you for your provision, especially the gift of Jesus Christ. Help me entrust my needs to you and recognize your grace in the help I receive. Amen.
