Genesis 16:13 — Meaning & Reflection
“She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: "You are the God who sees me," for she said, "I have now seen the One who sees me."”
You are not invisible to God, even when others overlook your pain.
Background
Hagar, Sarai's Egyptian servant, has fled into the wilderness after Sarai treats her harshly. There the angel of the Lord meets her, and she responds by naming the Lord who sees her.
Teaching
God's attention reaches a woman whose vulnerability others have failed to honor. He knows Hagar's circumstances and addresses her personally. This encounter reveals divine care without making the harsh treatment she suffered good or acceptable. When we feel unseen, we can bring our pain to God and seek support that honors our dignity and safety.
Reflect
- What part of my life do I need to bring before the God who sees me?
- Who around me needs to be noticed, heard, and treated with dignity?
Prayer
God who sees me, I bring you the pain I struggle to express. Help me receive your care and become more attentive to people whose suffering goes unnoticed. Amen.
