Genesis 15:5-6 — Meaning & Reflection
“He took him outside and said, "Look up at the heavens and count the stars-if indeed you can count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be." Abram believed the Lord , and he credited it to him as righteousness.”
Faith rests on the faithfulness of the One who promises, not the clarity of the path ahead.
Background
Abram has questioned how God's promise will be fulfilled because he remains without a child. God assures him of descendants as numerous as the stars, and Abram's belief is counted to him for righteousness.
Teaching
Abram cannot produce the promised future simply by willing it into being. He responds by trusting the Lord who speaks to him. The New Testament returns to this passage to explain righteousness received through faith rather than earned through works. Our hope rests not in flawless confidence, but in the faithful God whose grace we receive.
Reflect
- Where am I trying to earn the acceptance God invites me to receive through faith?
- What would trusting God's character look like while I wait?
Prayer
Father, help me rest in your grace rather than my ability to prove myself. Strengthen my trust in you when fulfillment remains beyond my sight. Amen.
