Genesis 1:1-3 — Meaning & Reflection
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.”
Before light appeared, God was already present in the darkness.
Background
Genesis opens with God creating the heavens and the earth. These verses introduce the creation account, in which God brings order and life through his word.
Teaching
The beginning of Scripture directs our attention first to God, the source of all creation. Darkness and emptiness do not place the world beyond his presence or power. When God speaks, light appears. We can bring our uncertain beginnings to him, trusting his wisdom even before we see what he is forming.
Reflect
- Where in my life do I feel surrounded by uncertainty or emptiness?
- How might remembering God's presence change the way I enter this day?
Prayer
Creator God, I bring you the places in my life that feel dark and unfinished. Help me trust your presence and receive the light of your truth today. Amen.
