Genesis 1:26-28 — Meaning & Reflection

“Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground."”

Genesis 1:26-28 (NIV)

Your dignity is God's gift, and your calling is to reflect his care.

Background

Near the conclusion of Genesis's first creation account, God creates humanity in his image, male and female. He blesses them and entrusts them with responsibility for the earth and its living creatures.

Teaching

Our worth begins with God's intention, not our achievements or another person's approval. Men and women alike bear his image and receive his blessing. The authority given to humanity is a responsibility to govern creation under God, not permission for careless exploitation. Honoring our Creator includes treating people with dignity and tending what he has entrusted to us.

Reflect

Prayer

Lord, help me receive my worth as your gift rather than something I must earn. Teach me to honor your image in others and care faithfully for your creation. Amen.
