Ephesians 1:3-6 — Meaning & Reflection
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will-- to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.”
Before we could offer God anything, his gracious purpose was to welcome us in Christ and shape us in holiness.
Background
Ephesians opens with an extended blessing praising God for his saving work in Christ. These verses emphasize God's eternal purpose, adoption, and grace before the passage continues with redemption and the promised Holy Spirit.
Teaching
Our relationship with God begins in his gracious purpose, not in our ability to impress him. In Christ, he brings believers into his family and calls them to become holy in his presence. Adoption and holiness belong together: we are welcomed by grace and formed for a life that reflects our Father. These blessings invite grateful worship rather than pride or anxious self-proving.
Reflect
- How does God's gracious initiative challenge my need to prove my worth?
- What part of my life needs to reflect more clearly the Father who has welcomed me?
Prayer
Father, I praise you for your grace and for welcoming me through Jesus Christ. Let the security of belonging to you deepen my gratitude and shape me in holiness. Amen.
