Ephesians 2:4-7 — Meaning & Reflection
“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.”
God's mercy meets us in spiritual death and gives us life with Christ.
Background
After describing humanity's condition in sin, Ephesians turns to God's merciful intervention. The following verses explain that salvation is God's gift of grace and leads to a life of good works.
Teaching
God does not wait for spiritually dead people to make themselves alive. Moved by love and rich mercy, he gives life through union with the risen Christ. Sharing in Christ's resurrection and heavenly standing speaks of a grace far greater than self-improvement. Our rescued lives will display God's kindness, drawing attention to his generosity rather than our accomplishments.
Reflect
- Where am I treating salvation as self-improvement rather than God's gift of new life?
- How might gratitude for God's mercy shape the way I treat someone struggling with sin?
Prayer
Father, thank you for meeting my helplessness with mercy and giving me life in Christ. Let my life bear witness to your kindness rather than my own importance. Amen.
