Acts 2:21 — Meaning & Reflection
“And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'”
God's invitation is wide: everyone who calls on the Lord may come seeking his saving mercy.
Background
At Pentecost, Peter quotes the prophet Joel to explain the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. His sermon goes on to proclaim the crucified and risen Jesus as Lord and Christ.
Teaching
This promise opens the door of hope to everyone who calls on the Lord. Calling on him is more than reciting words; it expresses dependence on the One who can save. Peter's sermon directs that dependence toward Jesus, whom God has raised from the dead. No background or past failure places a person beyond the reach of his invitation.
Reflect
- What makes it difficult for me to ask openly for God's saving mercy?
- Who might I be tempted to regard as beyond the reach of God's invitation?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I call on you with gratitude for your saving mercy. Deepen my trust in you and widen my heart toward others who need your grace. Amen.
