Acts 2:38-39 — Meaning & Reflection
“Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off--for all whom the Lord our God will call."”
God calls us out of sin and into a new life marked by forgiveness, baptism, and the Spirit's presence.
Background
After Peter's Pentecost sermon, his hearers are deeply convicted and ask what they should do. Peter calls them to repentance and baptism, announcing forgiveness and the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Teaching
Peter gives those troubled by their sin a concrete response: turn to God and be baptized in Jesus Christ's name. Repentance means a change of direction, not simply regret over the past. Forgiveness and the Holy Spirit reveal God's purpose to restore people and dwell among them. The promise reaches beyond the immediate crowd, showing that God's call is not confined to one generation or place.
Reflect
- Where is God inviting me to move beyond regret into a genuine change of direction?
- How does the promise of forgiveness and the Spirit encourage me to respond to God's call?
Prayer
Father, help me turn from sin and respond wholeheartedly to your call. Thank you for forgiveness through Jesus and for the gift of your Holy Spirit. Amen.
