2 Corinthians 4:16-18 — Meaning & Reflection
“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
Even as our strength wears thin, God renews us with a hope that suffering cannot outlast.
Background
Paul writes to the Corinthians about the suffering and hope that accompany his apostolic ministry. These verses follow his affirmation that the God who raised Jesus will also raise those who belong to him.
Teaching
Paul does not dismiss suffering; he places it beside the incomparable glory God has promised. Outward weakness can coexist with inward renewal because God's work reaches deeper than our circumstances. Looking toward what is eternal means trusting God's resurrection promise while living faithfully today. We can bring him our weariness without surrendering our hope.
Reflect
- Where do I feel worn down and need God's inward renewal?
- How might the promise of resurrection reshape my view of today's troubles?
Prayer
Father, I bring you my weariness and the burdens I cannot resolve. Renew me inwardly and help me trust your eternal promises amid what I can see. Amen.
