2 Corinthians 5:17-19 — Meaning & Reflection
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.”
In Christ, God gives us a new beginning and entrusts us with the message of his reconciling love.
Background
Paul is explaining how Christ's death and resurrection have transformed his ministry and his way of seeing people. He presents reconciliation as God's work through Christ and the message entrusted to Christ's ambassadors.
Teaching
Being in Christ means more than improving old habits; it means sharing in the new life God creates. Reconciliation begins with God, who acts through Jesus to bring sinners back to himself. Our new identity is therefore a gift of grace, not an achievement we must defend. Having received that gift, we are called to bear witness to his forgiveness and seek peace with others.
Reflect
- What part of my past am I allowing to define me more than my belonging to Christ?
- How can I share God's reconciling love with someone today?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank you for bringing me back to God and making me new. Help me live from your grace and become a faithful witness to your reconciling love. Amen.
