2 Corinthians 3:17-18 — Meaning & Reflection
“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever- increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”
The Spirit frees us to behold Christ and patiently transforms us into His likeness.
Background
Paul contrasts the old and new covenants, drawing on Moses' veil after meeting with God. He describes the veil being removed in Christ and believers being transformed through the Spirit.
Teaching
The Spirit's liberty is freedom to approach God with unveiled hearts, not permission to live without His guidance. As we behold the Lord's glory, we are changed into His likeness. This transformation is the Spirit's work, not a spiritual image we manufacture through effort alone. We can keep turning toward Christ in prayer, Scripture, and obedience, trusting Him to shape us over time.
Reflect
- What draws my attention away from beholding Christ and receiving His truth?
- Where can I trust the Spirit's transforming work rather than trying to manufacture outward change?
Prayer
Lord, turn my attention toward the glory of Christ. By Your Spirit, free my heart and shape my life into His likeness. Amen.
