2 Corinthians 1:3-4 — Meaning & Reflection

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.”

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (NIV)

God's comfort meets us in trouble and equips us to draw near to others with mercy.

Background

Paul opens this letter by praising God amid affliction and comfort. He goes on to describe severe trouble in Asia and his dependence on the God who raises the dead.

Teaching

God's comfort does not mean His people avoid suffering. It means the Father of mercies meets us within it, sustaining us with His care. The comfort we receive can become a gift we share through presence, listening, and practical compassion. We need not explain another person's pain to offer the mercy God has shown us.

Reflect

Prayer

Father of mercies, meet me in the places where I need Your comfort. Help me share Your care gently with someone who is hurting. Amen.
