1 Samuel 3:9-10 — Meaning & Reflection
“So Eli told Samuel, "Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, 'Speak, Lord , for your servant is listening.' " So Samuel went and lay down in his place. The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" Then Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening."”
A listening heart approaches God with humility, ready not only to hear but also to obey.
Background
Young Samuel serves under Eli at Shiloh during a time when the Lord’s word is rare. After Samuel repeatedly mistakes God’s call for Eli’s, Eli recognizes what is happening and teaches him how to respond.
Teaching
Samuel answers God with the posture of a servant who is ready to listen. Eli’s guidance shows that learning to discern can involve the help of others. The message Samuel receives concerns judgment on Eli’s household, reminding us that God’s word is not always comfortable. We cultivate a listening life through Scripture, prayer, and humble readiness to obey rather than treating every inward impression as God’s voice.
Reflect
- Am I willing to receive God’s word when it challenges rather than comforts me?
- What space can I make for attentive Scripture reading and prayer today?
Prayer
Lord, give me a humble heart that listens carefully to your word. Help me welcome wise guidance and obey what you make clear. Amen.
