1 Corinthians 6:19-20 — Meaning & Reflection
“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.”
Your body belongs to the God who redeemed you; honor Him with the life you live within it.
Background
Paul is addressing sexual immorality and explaining why believers' bodies matter to their union with Christ. He grounds bodily holiness in the Spirit's presence and the price of redemption.
Teaching
God's claim on us reaches beyond our thoughts and intentions to our embodied lives. We belong to Him because Christ redeemed us, not because we earned His welcome. Sexual integrity and faithful care for our bodies are responses to that costly love. Rather than treating the body as disposable or shameful, we can offer it to God with reverence and gratitude.
Reflect
- What bodily habit or choice needs to come under God's loving authority?
- How can I honor my body without making either appearance or comfort my highest concern?
Prayer
Father, thank You for redeeming me through Jesus and giving me Your Spirit. Help me honor You in my body and receive Your guidance with trust. Amen.
