1 Corinthians 3:16 — Meaning & Reflection
“Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?”
God dwells among His people, making our life together sacred ground.
Background
Paul addresses divisions in Corinth and describes the church as God's building. The plural address here identifies the congregation together as God's temple, followed by a warning against destroying it.
Teaching
The church is more than a gathering of people with shared interests. Through His Spirit, God makes His people together a dwelling place for His presence. That makes our treatment of one another spiritually significant, especially when disagreement tempts us toward contempt. Protecting unity through truth, humility, and patient love honors the God who lives among us.
Reflect
- How does God's presence among His people change the way I view my church?
- What can I do today to build up rather than tear down another believer?
Prayer
Lord, help me cherish the people among whom You dwell. Make my words and actions serve the health and unity of Your church. Amen.
