1 Corinthians 10:13 — Meaning & Reflection
“No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.”
Temptation is real, but God's faithfulness means surrender to sin is never your only path.
Background
Paul recalls Israel's failures in the wilderness as warnings against idolatry and overconfidence. He then assures the Corinthians of God's faithfulness before urging them to flee idolatry.
Teaching
Temptation can feel isolating, but Paul reminds us that we are not facing something uniquely ours. God remains faithful and provides a way to resist and endure without yielding to sin. This is not a promise that every hardship will feel manageable or that escape will be effortless. We can respond by turning toward His help, leaving dangerous situations, and seeking support rather than trusting ourselves alone.
Reflect
- What temptation am I treating as though resistance were impossible?
- What practical way of escape might God be providing that I need to take?
Prayer
Faithful God, help me turn toward You when temptation presses close. Give me humility to seek help and courage to take the way of escape You provide. Amen.
