1 Corinthians 15:54-57 — Meaning & Reflection
“When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory." "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?" The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Because Jesus is risen, death's final word over His people will be victory, not loss.
Background
Near the close of his teaching on resurrection, Paul describes mortal bodies being clothed with immortality. Drawing on Isaiah and Hosea, he celebrates God's victory over death through Jesus Christ.
Teaching
Christian hope is not merely that memories survive, but that God will raise His people to imperishable life. Sin gives death its sting, and the law exposes sin's condemning force. Through Christ's death and resurrection, God gives the victory we could never win for ourselves. We may grieve honestly while trusting that death will not have the final word.
Reflect
- Where do I need resurrection hope to meet my fear or grief?
- How might gratitude for Christ's victory shape the way I live today?
Prayer
Father, thank You for victory over sin and death through Jesus Christ. Hold me in my grief and teach me to live with the hope of resurrection. Amen.
