1 Corinthians 13:12-13 — Meaning & Reflection
“Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”
We can love faithfully today without understanding fully what God will one day make clear.
Background
Paul contrasts present, partial knowledge with the fullness still to come. His image of seeing indirectly through a mirror supports his call to prize love above spiritual distinction.
Teaching
Our present understanding is real but incomplete. God already knows us fully, even while we wait for the clarity of seeing face to face. This invites humility rather than anxious demands to explain every mystery. Faith and hope sustain us in the waiting, while love gives our lives their deepest expression of devotion.
Reflect
- What unanswered question do I need to entrust to the God who knows me?
- How can I practice love today even where my understanding remains incomplete?
Prayer
Father, help me rest in being fully known by You. Strengthen my faith and hope, and teach me to love while I wait for greater clarity. Amen.
