Romans 8:24-27 — Meaning & Reflection

“For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will.”

Romans 8:24-27 (NIV)

When hope requires waiting and prayer loses its words, the Spirit helps you in your weakness.

Background

Paul has described creation's groaning and believers' longing for the redemption of their bodies. He now connects patient hope with the Spirit's help and intercession.

Teaching

Christian hope reaches toward the fullness of salvation we do not yet see. Waiting for it can expose our weakness, including our uncertainty about what to pray. The Spirit does not stand apart from that weakness but helps us and intercedes according to God's will. Our confidence in prayer rests less on finding perfect words than on God's faithful care.

Reflect

Prayer

God, I bring you the longings I cannot fully explain. Help me by your Spirit to wait patiently and trust your will when I do not know what to pray. Amen.
