Romans 8:14-17 — Meaning & Reflection
“because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs--heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.”
The Spirit leads you not deeper into fear, but home to the Father.
Background
In Romans 8, Paul describes the new life believers receive through the Holy Spirit. Here he moves from the Spirit's guidance to adoption, inheritance, and sharing in Christ's suffering and glory.
Teaching
God receives those who belong to Christ as his children, not as slaves held at a fearful distance. By the Spirit, we can approach him with the intimate trust expressed in calling him Father. Our inheritance is bound to Christ, whose path includes suffering before glory. Hardship does not cancel our belonging; even there, the Spirit bears witness that we are God's children.
Reflect
- What fears make it difficult for me to approach God as my Father?
- How might belonging to God's family change the way I endure hardship?
Prayer
Father, help me receive the belonging you have given me in Christ. When I am afraid or hurting, remind me through your Spirit that I am your child. Amen.
