Psalm 37:23-24 — Meaning & Reflection
“If the Lord delights in a man's way, he makes his steps firm; though he stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand.”
A stumble does not place us beyond the reach of God’s sustaining hand.
Background
Psalm 37 is an alphabetic wisdom psalm attributed to David. It counsels the faithful not to envy the apparent prosperity of the wicked but to trust God and persevere in doing good.
Teaching
These verses picture a life directed and sustained by the Lord. They acknowledge that a faithful person can fall, so difficulty is not proof that God has abandoned us. The decisive assurance is that God upholds his people rather than leaving them helpless. We can take the next obedient step without demanding a path free from setbacks.
Reflect
- What setback has made me question whether God is still caring for me?
- What is the next faithful step I can take with his help?
Prayer
Father, when I stumble, remind me that I am not beyond your care. Uphold me and give me courage to take the next step in obedience. Amen.
