Psalm 36:5-7 — Meaning & Reflection
“Your love, O Lord , reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the great deep. O Lord , you preserve both man and beast. How priceless is your unfailing love! Both high and low among men find refuge in the shadow of your wings.”
The God whose faithfulness reaches the clouds offers shelter close enough for every weary heart.
Background
Attributed to David, Psalm 36 contrasts human wickedness with the vastness of God’s steadfast love. These verses turn from the deceitfulness of sin to praise for God’s mercy, righteousness, justice, and preserving care.
Teaching
The heavens, mountains, and deep waters give language to the greatness of God’s character. His mercy does not compete with his righteousness; both belong to the same faithful Lord. Yet this immense God is also pictured as a shelter beneath protective wings. We can approach him with reverence and confidence, trusting that his greatness includes tender care.
Reflect
- Which part of God’s character do I most need to remember today?
- Where am I seeking shelter apart from his faithful love?
Prayer
God, lift my thoughts beyond the limits of my worries to the greatness of your faithfulness. Help me find shelter in your lovingkindness and live with confidence in your care. Amen.
