Psalm 24:7-10 — Meaning & Reflection
“Lift up your heads, O you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is he, this King of glory? The Lord Almighty- he is the King of glory. Selah”
The King of glory invites our worship because his power and majesty belong to no other.
Background
Psalm 24, attributed to David, begins by declaring that the earth belongs to the Lord and asks who may stand in his holy place. It concludes with repeated calls for the gates to welcome the King of glory.
Teaching
The repeated call to the gates creates a picture of royal arrival and joyful welcome. The King is the Lord himself, whose strength surpasses every opposing power. His majesty reminds us that worship begins with who God is, rather than with what we need. As Christians, we also honour Jesus as Lord, whose victory through the cross and resurrection reveals the glory of God's saving love.
Reflect
- How might remembering God's majesty reshape my worship today?
- What part of my life am I reluctant to place under his loving authority?
Prayer
Lord, lift my attention beyond my immediate concerns to your glory. Help me welcome your rule with reverence, trust, and joyful obedience. Amen.
