Psalm 145:17-20 — Meaning & Reflection
“The Lord is righteous in all his ways and loving toward all he has made. The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them. The Lord watches over all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy.”
The God who hears your honest cry is both tender in His care and righteous in all His ways.
Background
Psalm 145 is an alphabetic praise psalm attributed to David, celebrating God's kingship and goodness across generations. Near its conclusion, these verses bring together His righteousness, nearness, saving care, and judgment of wickedness.
Teaching
God's nearness is an invitation to call on Him sincerely, with reverence and love. His promise to hear does not make prayer a means of securing every passing wish; it places our desires before His righteous wisdom. The same God who preserves those who love Him also judges wickedness, so His goodness includes justice. We can approach Him honestly, trusting both His compassion and His unwavering commitment to what is right.
Reflect
- Where do I need to speak to God more honestly rather than offer words I think I should say?
- How can God's righteousness reshape a desire I am bringing to Him?
Prayer
Righteous and loving God, I come to You with my true needs and desires. Teach me to love what is good, turn from what is evil, and trust Your compassionate wisdom. Amen.
