Proverbs 1:7 — Meaning & Reflection
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. Exhortations to Embrace Wisdom”
Wisdom begins when we stop making ourselves the final authority and learn to listen to God.
Background
Proverbs opens by identifying Solomon and describing the book’s purpose: instruction in wisdom, justice, and discernment. This verse establishes the foundation for the teachings that follow.
Teaching
The fear of the Lord is reverent recognition of who God is and our accountability to him. It makes us teachable, willing to receive correction rather than defend every assumption. Foolishness here is not a lack of intelligence but a refusal of wisdom and instruction. God invites us into knowledge that begins with humble trust in him.
Reflect
- Where am I resisting correction because I want to be right?
- How could reverence for God change the way I listen today?
Prayer
Lord, teach me to honor you more than my own opinions. Give me a humble heart that welcomes your wisdom and correction. Amen.
