Proverbs 9:10 — Meaning & Reflection
“"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”
Wisdom grows from knowing God, not merely knowing what to do.
Background
Proverbs 9 portrays Wisdom and Folly as contrasting hosts inviting people to their tables. This verse echoes Proverbs 1:7, grounding wisdom in reverence for the Lord.
Teaching
The fear of the Lord places God, rather than ourselves, at the center of understanding. Wisdom is therefore more than sound technique or successful decision-making; it involves a right relationship with him. Knowing God teaches us to take his holiness seriously and to welcome his instruction. We become wise as reverence reshapes both what we love and how we live.
Reflect
- Am I seeking God himself, or mainly seeking answers from him?
- How might a deeper awareness of God’s holiness reshape a decision I face?
Prayer
Holy God, deepen my knowledge of you and my reverence for your ways. Let my desire for answers become a greater desire to know and follow you. Amen.
