Proverbs 10:12 — Meaning & Reflection
“Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers over all wrongs.”
Love refuses to keep feeding the conflict that hatred wants to keep alive.
Background
Proverbs 10 begins a collection identified as the proverbs of Solomon, often arranged in short contrasts. This saying contrasts hatred’s power to provoke conflict with love’s willingness to cover offenses.
Teaching
Hatred repeatedly brings offenses forward, giving conflict fresh fuel. Love chooses a different response, seeking forgiveness and reconciliation rather than humiliation or revenge. Covering sins does not mean concealing abuse, denying harm, or removing the need for accountability. It means refusing to weaponize wrongdoing, reflecting the mercy God shows us and calls us to extend.
Reflect
- Am I keeping a conflict alive by repeatedly returning to an offense?
- What would a loving response look like while still honoring truth and safety?
Prayer
Lord, soften the resentment I am tempted to hold. Teach me to offer mercy without abandoning truth, and guide me toward peace that honors you. Amen.
