Proverbs 3:5-6 — Meaning & Reflection
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Trust is not the absence of thinking — it is refusing to make your own understanding the final word.
Background
Proverbs 1–9 is written as a father's instruction to his son, urging him to choose wisdom. Chapter 3 links wisdom with wholehearted trust in the LORD rather than self-reliance.
Teaching
Wholehearted trust leaves no compartment reserved for self-rule. Acknowledging God in every part of life means bringing him into ordinary decisions, not only crises. The promise is not that every path will be easy, but that he will make it straight, guiding the one who leans on him.
Reflect
- Where am I leaning most on my own understanding right now?
- What decision this week can I deliberately bring to God first?
Prayer
Lord, I confess how quickly I trust my own reasoning. Today I lean on You. Direct my steps, and give me peace when I cannot see the whole road. Amen.
