Proverbs 16:9 — Meaning & Reflection
“In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.”
Faith makes plans with open hands, trusting God with the steps we cannot yet see.
Background
This verse belongs to the collection of proverbs attributed to Solomon in Proverbs 10–22. Its surrounding sayings repeatedly place human intentions alongside the Lord’s sovereign purposes.
Teaching
Planning is not opposed to faith; wisdom invites us to consider our way carefully. Yet our understanding is limited, and our plans cannot secure every outcome. The Lord remains sovereign over the path ahead, inviting us to humility rather than anxious control. We can take the next responsible step while entrusting the outcome to him.
Reflect
- Which plan am I holding so tightly that I struggle to entrust it to God?
- What faithful next step can I take without knowing the whole path?
Prayer
Lord, help me plan wisely and hold my expectations gently. Teach me to trust your wisdom when my path unfolds differently than I hoped. Amen.
