Matthew 9:36-38 — Meaning & Reflection
“When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field."”
When we learn to see with Jesus’ compassion, prayer becomes the beginning of faithful service.
Background
Matthew describes Jesus traveling through towns and villages, teaching, preaching, and healing. His compassion for the crowds leads into his instruction to pray for workers and the sending of the twelve in chapter 10.
Teaching
Jesus sees more than a crowd; he sees people worn down and without needed guidance. His compassion reveals God’s concern for those who are vulnerable and lost. He tells his disciples to ask the Lord of the harvest for workers, acknowledging that the mission belongs to God. As we pray, we should also remain willing to become part of the answer through faithful service.
Reflect
- Whom have I been seeing as an inconvenience rather than a person needing compassion?
- How might God be inviting me to serve as I pray for more workers?
Prayer
Lord of the harvest, give me the compassion of Jesus for people who are weary and lost. Send faithful workers, and make me willing to serve wherever you lead. Amen.
