Matthew 9:12-13 — Meaning & Reflection

“On hearing this, Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."”

Matthew 9:12-13 (NIV)

Jesus meets our need with mercy and calls us into the healing path of repentance.

Background

After calling Matthew, Jesus shares a meal with publicans and sinners, prompting criticism from the Pharisees. He answers with the image of a physician and a quotation from Hosea 6:6.

Teaching

Jesus describes his mission through the care a physician gives the sick. Our sin is not a reason to hide from him, but a reason to seek his mercy. His appeal to Hosea exposes religious observance that has become detached from compassion. The mercy he offers welcomes sinners while calling them to repentance and a changed life.

Reflect

Prayer

Jesus, I bring you the sin and brokenness I am tempted to hide. Lead me in repentance and teach me to extend the mercy I receive from you. Amen.
