Matthew 7:7-8 — Meaning & Reflection

“"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.”

Matthew 7:7-8 (NIV)

Prayer is an invitation to keep turning toward the God who hears and welcomes you.

Background

In Matthew’s account of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus teaches his disciples to ask, seek, and knock. The following verses ground this invitation in the goodness of their heavenly Father.

Teaching

Jesus invites us to approach God with active, expectant trust. Asking, seeking, and knocking describe a life turned toward him rather than closed in self-reliance. This is not a promise that every request will unfold exactly as we imagine, but an assurance that prayer meets a good Father. We can bring our needs honestly and leave the manner of his answer in his hands.

Reflect

Prayer

Father, I bring you the needs I cannot resolve on my own. Teach me to seek you faithfully and trust your goodness as I wait. Amen.
