Matthew 16:24-26 — Meaning & Reflection
“Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?”
The life we surrender to Jesus is not wasted; it is found in the only One who can truly keep it.
Background
In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus speaks these words after predicting his suffering, death, and resurrection and correcting Peter’s resistance. He explains that following him also involves costly surrender.
Teaching
Denying ourselves means letting Jesus, rather than our own desires, direct our lives. Taking up the cross is a call to costly faithfulness, not merely enduring everyday inconveniences. Jesus exposes the emptiness of gaining everything while losing what matters eternally. His invitation leads us away from self-preservation and toward the life found in belonging to him.
Reflect
- Where am I resisting Jesus because obedience might cost me something?
- What would it look like to value my soul more than success or approval today?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I confess how tightly I hold to comfort and control. Help me surrender my plans and follow you with trust, believing that life with you is worth every cost. Amen.
