Matthew 14:27-29 — Meaning & Reflection
“But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." "Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water." "Come," he said.”
Faith takes its next step in response to Jesus’ voice, not in confidence that the waters are calm.
Background
After feeding the five thousand, Jesus sends the disciples ahead by boat and goes to pray alone. During the night he approaches them walking on the sea, and Peter asks to come to him.
Teaching
Jesus meets the disciples’ fear by making his presence known. Peter does not step out simply because risk is admirable; he asks Jesus to command him and responds to that invitation. His steps depend on the power of Christ rather than his own ability to master the water. This passage invites us to obey Jesus amid uncertainty, not to mistake every daring impulse for faith.
Reflect
- Where do I need to listen more carefully for Jesus’ direction before acting?
- What clear step of obedience am I delaying because my circumstances feel unsettled?
Prayer
Jesus, help me recognize your presence when I am afraid. Give me discernment to follow your word and courage to obey when I cannot see how the way will hold. Amen.
