Mark 2:16-17 — Meaning & Reflection
“When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the "sinners" and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: "Why does he eat with tax collectors and 'sinners'?" On hearing this, Jesus said to them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."”
Jesus meets our need with mercy and calls us toward the healing of repentance.
Background
After calling Levi, Jesus shares a meal with publicans and sinners, prompting criticism from scribes and Pharisees. He answers their objection with the image of a physician caring for the sick.
Teaching
Jesus does not keep his distance from people marked by sin and social rejection. Like a physician, he comes near because their need matters to him. His welcome does not dismiss sin; it opens the way to repentance and restoration. We receive his mercy by acknowledging our need, and we reflect it by refusing to treat others as beyond his reach.
Reflect
- What need am I tempted to hide rather than bring honestly to Jesus?
- Whom have I treated as less deserving of welcome or mercy?
Prayer
Jesus, I bring you the sin and need I cannot heal myself. Lead me into repentance, and make my heart welcoming toward others who need your mercy. Amen.
