Luke 1:46-49 — Meaning & Reflection

“And Mary said: "My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me-- holy is his name.”

Luke 1:46-49 (NIV)

Gratitude grows when we see that God’s greatness includes his attention to our smallness.

Background

Mary speaks this song of praise during her visit to Elizabeth, who has blessed her as the mother of the Lord. Often called the Magnificat, the song echoes the language and themes of Israel’s Scriptures, including Hannah’s prayer.

Teaching

Mary’s joy centers on God, whom she names as her Saviour. She recognizes that her blessedness comes from his gracious attention, not from worldly status. His mighty deeds and holy character belong together: the powerful God is also worthy of complete trust. Her praise teaches us to acknowledge what God has done without making ourselves the center of the story.

Reflect

Prayer

God my Saviour, thank you for seeing me in the ordinary places of my life. Let my gratitude magnify your goodness rather than my importance. Amen.
